Topic: BLESSING THE LORD
Text: Psalms 34:1-5
1:I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
2: My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
3: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.
4: I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
5: They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.
The word “bless” or “blessing” comes from the Old English word bledsian, based on the Old English word for blood. It may have originally meant “to consecrate with blood” and it was later used to translate the Latin word benedicere, which means “to praise, worship.” The word “bless” is also used to translate the Hebrew word barak, which means “to praise, congratulate or salute.” In the common vernacular, the word is used to indicate a wish of good fortune upon the one receiving the blessing.
So when you see ‘ bless the Lord, oh my soul ‘
‘ I will bless the Lord ‘, ‘ blessed be the name of the Lord ‘, it simply means praise the Lord.
Psalm 34 was written by king David when had faced a life threatening situation. David saw the need to praise God at all times, he knew his life would have gone and so he considered it wise to commit the rest of his life to God who spared him from death. And so he said in verse 1:I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
He knew that he had no reason to live but for God, he realized that God is the reason for his living and he considered it wise to dedicate his life to praising God always.
How many times has God delivered us from life threatening situations? How many times have we escaped death? And where is your dedication to God as a form of appreciation?
Do you know why God saw David as a man after his own heart? It is simply because David always see reason to praise the Lord in all situations just like Job.
What Does David mean when he said, ‘ I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth ‘. He meant for what the Lord has done for me in the past his praise will continually be in my mouth.
Do you that know the reasons why some people do praise God at all times? It is because they feel dissatisfied about something in their life or around them, but the Psalmist said, ‘ Lord no matter what happens around me, I will bless you at all times ‘.
Dissatisfaction is a dangerous seed from hell that produces ingratitude and many people easily fall victim of this. Everyone who can think deeply like the Psalmist will make a commitment to bless the Lord at all times. God bless you.
