Text: Colossians 3:1-5.

1: If then you have been raised with Christ [to a new life, thus sharing His resurrection from the dead], aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2: And set your minds and keep them set on what is above (the higher things), not on the things that are on the earth.
3: For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.
5: So kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members [those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin]: sexual vice, impurity, sensual appetites, unholy desires, and all greed and covetousness, for that is idolatry (the deifying of self and other created things instead of God). Amplified.

Apostle Paul wrote the Colossians, to those who are truly dead and risen in Christ, verse 1 categorically states the class of people he was writing to. I see Paul saying, ‘ I am not writing to mere church services attendees, not to those bearing Christian names, or born in a Christian family, but to those who are dead in Christ and are risen with him to a new life.

The beginning of chapter 3 of the book Colossians shows the apostle got serious things to say. Paul was actually saying, ‘ I am not writing to those who are not serious about their christian life ‘. If possible he would have instructed that the letter be given to the serious ones among them only.

* In that same verse 1 he said, ‘..aim at and seek the [rich, eternal treasures] that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Amplified. Aim at eternal riches and treasures, don’t be carried away with the affairs of this world.

Why was Apostle sounding like this? He knew there are tendencies for them to derail. It will shock you to know that Demas was with him when he was writing the Colossians, yet Demas left the faith for pleasures of this world.

Look at these scriptures:
Colossians 4:14 Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you.
He was there when Paul was writing this epistle alas! in 2Timothy 4:10 For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica.

The deceptions, distractions and delusion of the things of this world have made many lose focus of heavenly things and eternal home. The first point of emphasis here is for them not to lose focus of eternal riches because of the riches of this world. Let me stop here for now, I will continue in part 2. God bless you.

* Lord, help not to lose focus of eternal riches for earthly riches.
* Help me not to be carried away with the affairs of this world in Jesus name.
