Text: Philippians 1:9-10.
9: And this I pray: that your love may abound yet more and more and extend to its fullest development in knowledge and all keen insight [that your love may display itself in greater depth of acquaintance and more comprehensive discernment],
10: So that you may surely learn to sense what is vital, and approve and prize what is excellent and of real value [recognizing the highest and the best, and distinguishing the moral differences], and that you may be untainted and pure and unerring and blameless [so that with hearts sincere and certain and unsullied, you may approach] the day of Christ [not stumbling nor causing others to stumble]. Amplified version
The Christians at Philippi were loyal disciples to Apostle Paul, the Apostle make it his responsibility to let them know what they ought know and do.
Chapter 1 of his letter to them contains some salient points which every Christian show you know. l want to expatiate verses 9 and 10 here.
In verse 9 the Apostle prayed that their/our (christians) love will extend to the point of discernment. What does he mean by this? As we grow in love towards God, we come to a point we that we can discern by his Spirit. As we move towards God in love his Spirit possesses us to the point that we can discern what is excellent.
What does Apostle Paul mean by what is excellent? Many labour over vain things, what will not last, they labour over perishable things, mundane things. For instance: as good as riches and wealth are they aren’t eternal because they are time-bound.
So, the Apostle needed to tell the christians at Philippi to watch out for excellent things in life. Why did Paul sound like that? This is simply because in pursuit of excellent things they will be untainted, unblemished, pure.
Excellent things are things that benefit the soul for eternity. Many people have dent their image because temporary comfort.
Christians need to know that they must be untainted and undefiled. This is possible as we draw closer to God and our love towards him grows stronger daily. God bless you.
* I receive grace to be untainted and undefiled in Jesus name.
