Glory to God who gives us inspiration daily, Pastor Stephen Olumade by the Spirit of the Lord has done justice to the series titled ‘ THE PLACE OF GLORY ‘. I am starting another series by the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Our text simply talked about Jesus instructing Matthew to follow him, a lot happened in that singular verse; Matthew 9:9. If you don’t know who Matthew was you wouldn’t understand the level of his sacrifice. Let me start to lay foundation here. Matthew was a tax collector: a profession that is reviled by the Jews.
Tax collectors were sinners by trade, lying and cheating their way into riches and robbing from even the poorest among their people. They were religious outsiders, because the way they practiced their profession openly defied the Law of Moses. The richer they were, the worse they were assumed to be.
Matthew was at a post he gets money daily, as day breaks each morning, he had assurance that he will get money before the end of the day. Following Jesus, when there will be no assurance of daily income, no assurance of food sometimes, will require deep thought.
What is the purpose of this teaching: there are too many believers whose purpose of following Jesus is for benefits, there are too many miracle seeking believers, Matthew was not in the class of such believers.
Matthew’s response to Jesus was movement from assurance of wealth to the life of faith. Their needs have to be meant by faith, no specific shelter, no allowances, no salaries, they couldn’t control their time anymore.
He had a place he did resume and was confident that he will get money, but now he will just need to follow Jesus blindly, he couldn’t schedule appointment with anyone anymore, his schedule will now be determined by Jesus.
Jesus could just wake up and say ‘ we are going Galilee, Jericho and Gadarenes ‘. It is a serious decision to take but Matthew answered without fear, coming out of comfort zone to trek under the sun with Jesus preaching the Gospel.
* Jesus, I will follow you.
