Text: 1 Kings 18:36-37 KJV

36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said,
Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.
37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

In part two of this devotional topic, we discussed that apart from being the God of instant answers to prayers, the God of Elijah is also the God that answers prayers by fire.
Today we want to consider the purpose of the fire, or simply why would God answer prayers by fire. From our scriptural text above, Elijah stated it clearly and declared it to God why he needed God to send down fire upon the sacrifice on the altar. So the purpose of the fire is:

  • To show that God is God: Elijah needed a proof to show that the Almighty God is still the God of Israel, and that he is a living God and not a dead God nor a weakling but also the active and the most powerful God who can answer prayer instantly and answer by fire. In addition, Elijah needed the fire to turn the Israelites from the dead god of Baal back to the living God. I pray that God will send down fire upon your enemies to show them that he is your God in Jesus Name.

  • To show that Elijah was his prophet: The Israelites were at a point where Jezebel their King’s wife had made them to believe in the prophets of Baal as the real prophets and then despised and relegated Elijah as a fake prophet who want no good for Israel. So Elijah needed God to answer by fire to prove to the Israelites that he was a true prophet of God and God did. As God did in the days of Elijah, he will do the same for you today in Jesus Name. I pray God will defend you before your adversaries today by fire in Jesus Name.

Dearly beloved, the God of Elijah is still the same today as he was in the days of Elijah (Hebrews 13:8), and so he will answer you by fire today in Jesus Name, if only you believe in him. God bless you.
* Father, demonstrate your power in my life as you did for Elijah.
Psalms 116, Mark 10.
