Topic: AT THE CROSS part 2
Text: John 19:28-30KJV
28 Afterthis, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture mightbe fulfilled, said,“I thirst!”
29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.
30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said,“It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
The significance of the cross to our faith cannot be over emphasized. In part 1, we established that at the cross God’s purpose was fulfilled and the lost fellowship between God and man was restored.
Today we want consider another importance of the cross to our faith. One very significance of the cross is that, at the cross the devil was defeated.
The battle of the devil against man began from when he Lucifer was cast down from heaven to earth. This was clearly stated in Revelation 12:12 which says ….Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. So devil always battle with man, and against any provision made by God for man.
In Genesis 3, God created man and placed him in Eden, but devil came as a serpent, deceived man to sin against his maker and so man lost Eden because God had to chase man out of Eden.
In Matthew 2, when Jesus Christ (the saviour of man) was born in Bethlehem, devil in his wrath arose through King Herod, who sought to kill Jesus so that Jesus would not live to fulfil God’s purpose of redemption for man. When Herod could not ascertain where the baby Jesus was born, he ordered the killing of 0-2 years old baby boys in the whole of his kingdom.
In Matthew 27, when Jesus was arrested to be crucified, devil rose against him by stirring up the crowd who preferred that Barnabas a thief found guilty should be released while Jesus who was faultless should be crucified. See what the people said in Matthew 27:24-25 “When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.”
Beloved, devil thought crucifying Jesus was going to be the end of God’s redemption purpose for man but he never knew it would be the end of his (devil) battle against the soul man. Before Jesus died on the cross, he declared it is finished, meaning every work of the devil is finished and defeated in the life of that man who has been redeemed at the cross (1 John 3:8). God bless you.
* Father, let the battles of the devil over my life and my home be defeated in Jesus Name.
