Topic: GOD THE SON: THE MERCY ADVOCATE
Text: 1 John 2:1-6 KJV
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
We are still on the concept of the Trinity. Last week we learnt that all the ways of God the father are judgment (justice) (Deuteronomy 32:4), He judges every act of sin from any person, family or nation, he judges the sinners, he is no respecter of persons. Today we want to consider one of the important ministry of God the son which is advocating for mercy for all before God the father.
In the dispensation of God the father in the old testaments, his judgement are great, those who experienced his wrath never found it amusing, a study of how God dealt with the Egyptians before Moses and the Israelites really shows that he is a consuming fire. Nowadays many think God is slow to judge, or that he no longer gets angry with sins of men as it was in the days of old, beloved, God is not slow to judge, he has not changed, he is still the same God in the days of Moses and Elijah, his standards are still the same (2 Timothy 2:19), the difference is that we have Jesus, the son who is an advocate of mercy.
From our text above, Jesus the righteous is our advocate before the father, he is not an advocate only for believers but for all the world (sinners and saints), what it means is that the son pleads with the father not be angry at the sins, wickedness and disobedience of the world. The son would say to the father “forgive them for they know not what they do”, even when Jesus was being crucified on the cross, and he was scorned, mocked and the soldiers cast lots over his garment, his prayer point was ” father forgive them for they know not what they do”.
Beloved, Jesus, the advocate for mercy is the reason why it seems God withhold his anger upon the sins and wickedness of men, but it’s important to note that this however is not a license to continue in sin like Romans 6:1 says “Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? God forbid”. Secondly, at the second coming of Jesus, this dispensation of mercy and grace will elapse, then the full wrath of God the father will be unleashed upon all sinners. God bless you.
PRAYER:
* Father, help me not to take your grace and mercy for granted in Jesus Name.
