Topic : DANGER OF PRIDE
Text: Proverbs 11:2 KJV
2 When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.
Pride refers either to a justified or excessive belief in one’s own worth, merit, superiority, etc, It could also implies an exaggerated opinion of oneself, one’s achievements, etc. The negative impact of pride could be very dangerous and it’s a great weapon in the hand of the devil against any man.
Some dangers of pride are:
- Sin: Pride is a sin against God, Proverb 16:5 says “Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.” Pride being a sin certainly has its wages just as the scripture above states that such act will not go unpunished.
-
Shame: This is one of the punishment of pride, in fact Proverbs 11:2 says when pride comes, shame comes, in other words shame is always present where pride is, and anyone who lives in pride will certainly harvest shame. A good example is King Nebuchadnezzar according to Daniel 4:28-36, he said to himself “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for a royal dwelling by my mighty power and for the honor of my majesty?”, as soon as he said these, God dealt with him, God turned him to a beast and he was driven to the forest, what an experience of shame?
-
Destruction: Pride they say goes before a fall, meaning aside from shame, pride can eventually lead to destruction or death if not checkmated. King Herod was another King according Acts 12:21-24, who exalted himself above God. He ascribed the glory that belong to God to himself, and his subjects who heard him speak said his voice was the voice of God and not voice of a man, and immediately an angel of God smote him such that he was eaten up by worms alive till he died. Herod’s experience was not just shameful but led to his fall.
Dearly beloved, as I conclude, the scripture says God resists (rejects) the proud but give grace to the humble, pride is a very potent weapon in the hand of the enemies against any man, therefore be sensitive ( I mean do not be ignorant of this device of the devil) and guard your heart against it. God bless you
PRAYER:
* Father, help me to guard my heart with all diligence and give me grace to be humble and not proud in Jesus Name.
