Topic: OVERCOMING TEMPTATIONS ( part 4 )
Text: Numbers 25: 1-1-18
1:And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.
3: And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel.
4: And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel.
5: And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.
As I round off this series of teaching today, I want to focus on THE CONSEQUENCES OF YIELDING TO TEMPTATION. Our passage today is what every believer should read, the whole chapter 25, but you might not understand chapter 25 until you read chapter 23.
Look at chapter 23:21,23 of Numbers
[God] has not beheld iniquity in Jacob [for he is forgiven], neither has He seen mischief or perverseness in Israel [for the same reason]. The Lord their God is with Israel, and the shout of praise to their King is among the people.
Surely there is no enchantment with or against Jacob, neither is there any divination with or against Israel. [In due season and even] now it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What has God wrought!
Chapter 23 and 25 were talking about the same set of people, in 23 they ( Israelites ) were untouchable, no form of enchantment against them, no charm, no weapon, no diabolic power could prosper against them, they were standing right with God, they wouldn’t play with sin, they wouldn’t bow to idols, but alas, in chapter 25 they were on the laps of the daughters of Moab, they were enticed by the Moabite women and they consented. They couldn’t say no to seduction, to Jezebelic dressing of the daughters of Moab, Prophet Balaam told them, ‘ the only way to overcome these people is to make them sin, except they sin, they can’t be conquered Rev. 2:14.
Balaam was a seer, he told King Balak,’ you can’t conquer them except they fall, just ensure they fall then, you will have them conquered ‘. Beloved, this is applicable to every Christian, when you fall to sin the devil will have his way, he will make a mess of your life.
Let’s see the calamity that befell the Isrealites; plague came upon them look at verse 9:Nevertheless those who died in the [smiting] plague were 24,000. Before they fell to temptation none of them died but when they fell 24,000 people died, what a tragedy?
Falling into temptation opens door to the devil, demons will have their way, answers to prayer will be hindered, progress will be slow. Any kind of sin opens door to the devil, sleeping with a woman who is not wife is like playing with a lion, it has great consequences, stealing and fraud won’t make you prosperous. Telling lies won’t give you lasting profit.
By God’s grace you can overcome every temptation, receive that grace today. God bless you.
