Topic: DON’T LOOK BACK
Text: Luke 9:62 KJV
62-And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God
We are running a race on this earth until we get to our home (The heavenly Kingdom). Like Apostle Paul describe it in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27, that athletes running a race are running to win a crown which is corruptible or perishable, but we are running to win incorruptible crowns. Any athletes who wants to win an Olympic medals is focused and does not give room for any distraction, he or she is well disciplined and readily prepared for the tournament to be a winner, and so it is for us running the race of the heavenly kingdom, we must be focus, never distracted and readily prepared at all times to win the crown.
There are great deal of distractions as we run this race ranging from peer pressure, family issues, affection for the things the world can offer, the quest to be rich and make ends meet e.t.c. I will like to point out a few things as we run this race:
- First, we run this kingdom race individually. Many are not conscious of this fact that it is an individual race, even though we (Christians) are many and we are one in the body of Christ, we do not run this race collectively. If you are conscious of this you will never allow the attitude, behaviour, misconduct of any fellow Christian even your Pastor to make you look back.
-
Secondly, we are in the world but we are not of this world (1 John 2:15-17). If you bear this in mind, that you are strangers on earth then you will behave indeed as stranger and not like a citizen of this world. See what Hebrew 11:13 says about the Apostles of old ” These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth”. Your life style should really be different and strange, if people class you as just a church goer or just a christian as often professed, then you are already becoming a citizen of this world.
-
Thirdly, this world is all vanity. Whatever it is that gets you distracted will perish and vanish away, whatever you may lust after on earth will disappear one day, or let me put it this way, whatever the world may offer you will end or perish with this world. So its not worth it to allow worldly distraction to miss your heavenly crown. 1 John 2:17 says the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. So it is only those who do the will of God, who never look back that will abide forever.
Dearly beloved, look unto Jesus the author and the finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), and do not look back, nothing on earth is worth trading your soul for, even the book of Mark 8:37 asked that what can a man used in exchange for his soul? Absolutely nothing can worth the soul of man an in exchange to God. God bless you
