Topic: BE YE HOLY
Text : 1 Peter 1:1-25
1 Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1 Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Our topic this morning is a commandment, it is given by the creator to all creatures, as you know disobedience to every commandment attracts punishment. It is like your employer telling you ‘ don’t be late to work ‘ persistent lateness will definitely attract sanction.
It is also like an invigilator telling an examination candidate ‘ don’t cheat ‘, obviously cheating will attract sanction, or your employer says ‘ don’t be rude to customers ‘ but you are always fighting them, certainly you are about to lose that job. There is consequences for every disobedience in every organization, you can now imagine severe consequences that will follow disobedience to God’s instructions.
HOW TO BE HOLY.
* The first thing this to do is to believe that by the grace of God you can be holy, stop telling yourself ‘ everybody is a sinner ‘, that’s not true. Look at the scriptures people use to back up their sinful acts: 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Verse 10 clearly refers to the past, everyone that came out of Adam was born into sin, but Jesus blood cleanses us when we repent, look at this: 1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
Look at 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. So, it is satanic to believe that you cannot live above sin.
- This illustration best describe how to living above sin: when a man is poor, he prays to God to bring him out of poverty, it will be right for him to look for job, he won’t just sit at home praying, he goes out and consult with people about how he can make a living for himself and family, and God in turn blesses him with good job, by that he comes out of poverty, in like manner, a man struggling with sin, prays to God for grace to live above sin, it will be wrong for him to indulge himself in things that will lead him to sin.
If I am trusting God to stop drinking alcohol, it will be wise of me to keep away from friends that will always want to buy me such drinks. If I have problem with lust, it will be wrong of me to keep my eyes on ladies as they pass, or watch phonograms. So, as I trust God to live holy, I abstain from anything that can lure me to sin, and of course God is willing to help me live holy. HOLINESS IS A MUST FOR EVERYONE WHO DOES NOT WANT TO END UP IN HELL. Be ye holy.
PRAYER.
* Lord break the yoke of sin in my life.
* Help me to always say no to sin.
