Text. : 1 Timothy 6:1-21
1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Contentment simply means satisfaction. It is important to understand that , human wants are insatiable, the Adamic nature inherited by all, always desire more, even after getting more, wants more. This unsatisfiable desire of man has led many into trouble , some have committed different kinds of sins in the course acquiring more of wealth.
In the quest of getting rich and richer ungodly steps have been taken, sometimes you do not care who is hurt, some have made the poor poorer in an attempt to get richer. Apostle Paul writing Timothy told him in v.9: They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lust. Some have ensnared their lives because of greed, no matter how much they have they are never satisfied.
V.9 goes on to say which drown men in destruction and perdition, this means lack of contentment has capacity to draw one into destruction and perdition. Uncontrollable desire for anything is a strong weapon in the hand of the devil, with which he ruins many lives. But you can be free if you want.
V. 6 says ‘ But godliness with contentment is great gain ‘. Everyone who lives godly in life should expect great gain, in order words, being satisfied with what you have and living godly guarantee you great gain in life. Greed makes a man works all his life and never come to a point of satisfaction, the more he acquires the more sorrowful and dissatisfied he gets, and if care is not taken, he can lose all he laboured for in his life time in one day.
* Lord deliver me from uncontrollable desire.
