Topic: SPIRITUAL SONGS
Text: Ephesians 5:17-19, KJV.
17 – Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 – And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 – Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Spiritual songs are songs written, composed and sang solely by the inspiration of the Holyspirit. Examples of spiritual songs are psalms and hymns. Spiritual songs are powerful, and greatly inspired by the Holyspirit for deliverance, upliftment of the soul, salvation, healing, miracles, encouragement e.t.c. For example in 1 Sam 16:23 when an evil spirit came upon King Saul, David drove away that spirit with songs played on instrument.
I have often wonder why Christians tend to modify rhythm of worldly songs to compose spiritual songs, and also, why a lot of Christians sing and dance to worldly music with claims that “they don’t listen to the lyrics, they only like and dance to the rhythm”. Some even have them as ring tones on their mobile phones.
Beloved, these ought not to be, we are in the world but we are not of the world. 1 John 2:15 says, ‘we should not love the world and the things in the world’. Our text today says we should only admonish ourselves with Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Worldly music promotes sexual immorality, corruption and all forms of ungodly vices. Moreso, it is a potent tool in the hand of the devil especially for youths. However, spiritual songs like hymns give strength to the weary heart. Some of them are songs composed centuries ago yet they don’t fade away or expire, they stand the test of time and still inspires us today.
Beloved, let’s stand for God alone and stop confessing to be on God’s side whereas we love to live in the pattern of the world. God bless you.
PRAYER:
1. Father, help me to live for you alone and not for the devil;
2. Help me Lord to experience your presence and power in spiritual songs.
