Topic: A BROKEN SPIRIT
Text: Psalms 51:16-19 KJV
16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
A broken spirit is a repentant spirit from a heart that is completely humble and submissive to God. Its from a heart that cannot help himself but need God to help. Its from a heart that recognise he has been in a deep pit of sin and desire God’s mercy, forgiveness and restoration.
From our text God does not despise a broken spirit and a contrite heart, infact the Psalmist says its the first sacrifice God require from everyone before any other sacrifice of offering, services e.t.c
The story of a Pharisee and a Publican who prayed unto God in a temple explained it better according to Luke 18:10-14. The sciptures say “And the publican, standing afar off,
would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.” That’s a broken spirit and he went home justified compared to the Pharisee who was parading himself a righteous man.
Dearly beloved, God want us to be acceptable before Him first before we offer unto Him our substances and services. Be broken in the spirit and be contrite in heart because its an acceptable sacrifice to God. God bless you
PRAYER:
Father, help me to be broken in spirit and should not thing highly of myself than I should in Jesus Name
